Hull need to regroup quick ahead of Thursday’s game against St Helens.
Paul Cooke has stated that Hull FC need to pull together during what is going to be a ‘jittery’ period over the next couple of weeks, with honesty and transparency key.
The former Black and Whites half-back has called on the club to put a clear plan in place on how they move forward following Tuesday’s news that John Cartwright will depart the club at the end of the season.
That will see a new head coach brought in for the 2027 season, expected to be Steve McNamara, with Hull having one week to the day to prepare for their next Super League outing against St Helens next Thursday night.
Speaking on All Out Rugby League’s Back 10 podcast, Cooke said: “I think the big thing for the players and what John and the staff have got for the next week at least is time because there’s no game for them this weekend. They’re out of the Challenge Cup, so they’ve got time to prepare for the next game.
“The news coming at the beginning of the week is probably a good thing, but one thing I do know about players and coaching players is if they’re not informed of things, then their heads spin, and you’ve got players there that will have signed for John Cartwright that don’t know what’s going to happen with their contracts. Staff as well.
“Whenever a staff member changes or there are announcements of staff changes, everybody gets jittery and nervous and anxious because they don’t know what it means for them. There’s a huge backlash to come from that and it’s really important that there’s transparency, there’s honesty, and there are some real honest conversations with players, staff members, and everybody at the club.
“If it’s going to move forward into one direction and everybody pulls in the same direction, then everybody’s got to understand where their role is in it. The next couple of weeks are going to be crucial for the club to make sure everything’s in place and everybody knows where they’re going.”
Meanwhile, Ged Corcoran, the Ireland head coach, has laid out the factors that will be affecting Hull’s squad as they come to terms with the Cartwright news ahead of their next clash against the Saints.
“I think timing is everything,” he said. “It’s crucial and it has an impact further down the road in terms of your next game, your next fixture, your next performance, your preparation, your training, and your players’ mindset.
“So again, there’ll be a lot of questions from those players that they want answers to. Were they informed before, or were they not? Has it just come out of the blue? Has it come as a shock to us all?
“But again, I think timing is crucial and everything because there’s always repercussions off the back of poor timing. How well informed have the players been? Did they see it coming? Did they not?
“They’re the question marks that I have because again, one thing that we know for sure is there’ll always be the reaction from the action. How well have they been comforted? How informed have they been?
“Look, we’ll see further down the road. I don’t like to get personally caught up in the politics. It’s tough as a player but also tough for John as well. He’ll be dealing with some stuff there, but let’s see what the next couple of days brings in terms of a club statement and go from there.”
