Wins for the scholars, an injury comeback for a young first team player, and some roadside heroics – the latest Hull FC notebook.

Hull FC’s reserves, scholars, and women’s sides have all been in action over the last week – with one team impressing on and off the field. Here’s the latest notebook.

Scholars win thriller

Hull FC’s under-16s side made it three wins on the bounce with a 30-24 victory over Huddersfield Giants on Wednesday night. The Black and Whites had a last-minute winning try from Louie Beet to thank, with the game locked at 24-24 and the edge forward stepping up to take Jacob Last’s pass to score.

That capped what was a thrilling contest at the University of Hull in what was a physical and entertaining game. Huddersfield provided tough opposition and led 12-10 at half-time, but Hull, led by some impressive stints from their middle forwards, rallied to make it a hat-trick of wins.

Hammering Leeds Rhinos 58-0 in their first game of the year last month, the scholars also managed a 28-26 victory away at Warrington Wolves last week. They face Hull KR at Craven Park next Wednesday night, while the academy derby takes place at the University of Hull this Friday night.

Hull FC reserves beaten

Hull FC reserves were defeated 46-22 at Wakefield Trinity the week before last. Trinity fielded a strong side, with Hull’s good news coming from Ryan Westerman, with the centre playing his first game since recovering from injury. After an injury-hit year with foot and ankle problems, he’ll now look to kick on this spring, with the reserves next in action against St Helens on April 18.

Loan watch

Hull FC pair Will Kirby and Joe Phillips were part of Hunslet’s Championship win at Keighley Cougars on Saturday. Kirby started in the back row, while Phillips came off the bench. The duo’s loans are week to week, with Hunslet now hosting Newcastle Thunder this Sunday afternoon.

Women progress in cup and assist traffic accident

Hull FC’s women’s side defeated Rochdale Hornets 20-4 on the road in the Challenge Shield on March 29. Before that, the team attended to a road accident on the M62 while heading to the game.

A club statement read: “The team were travelling to their Women’s Challenge Shield fixture against Rochdale Hornets when they witnessed a serious car accident unfold in front of them on the M62, close to Howden.

“Upon witnessing a vehicle leave the road, players and staff immediately offered support by releasing individuals from the vehicle, which was partly submerged in water within a roadside ditch, as well as administering first-aid on the scene and ensuring oncoming traffic on the motorway safely avoided the scene of the accident, before contacting the emergency services. Thankfully, the occupants of the vehicle only suffered minor injuries.

“The players and staff were commended by the emergency services personnel who quickly arrived on the scene. Following the incident, the team left the scene and went on to claim a 20-4 victory in Rochdale on Sunday afternoon, progressing to the Third Round of the Women’s Challenge Shield.

“The team and support staff acted bravely and calmly when presented with an incredibly difficult situation, and the club extends their heartfelt gratitude for their actions.”

The women’s side next face Workington Town in Cumbria this Sunday afternoon.
