Some areas of Saturday Market will need to be closed during the construction period

Highway works will take place at Beverley Saturday Market, East Riding of Yorkshire Council has announced. This will be the final phase of improvements for the pedestrian area and parking layout, which were made permanent in May 2024.

Funded by the Department for Transport, the £530,000 project aims to make the area more accessible for pedestrians and ensure parking areas are clear to visitors. The works are due to begin from Monday, January 19.

The current pedestrian area is set out using temporary markings and planters. The upcoming works, which expected to be completed by Wednesday, June 10, will remove the full height kerb and replace the existing block paving with York stone slabs to make the pedestrian area consistent with surrounding footways.

The existing block paving within the parking area will be re-laid to suit the new layout to ensure parking areas are clear to all and enable the inclusion of two further pay and display car parking spaces. Additionally, the group of six blue badge holder spaces will be rearranged to allow better visibility and space for vehicles driving around the adjacent corner.

The existing cycle stands and wooden benches will be retained and bolstered by further new seating, bollards and replacement planters. The council said that the works are planned during the quieter months to minimise disruption.

However, some areas of Saturday Market will need to be closed during the construction period for safety purposes, the council confirmed. Access will be maintained to businesses and properties. The council will also carry out maintenance work to other areas of block paving within Saturday Market at the same time.

Councillor Paul West, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for environment and transport said: “This is a positive scheme to improve Beverley for residents, businesses and visitors. We thank residents and businesses for their patience during this time and look forward to seeing the project completed in time for the summer.”
