The new store will create up to 40 new jobs in the East Yorkshire town
The date for when the new Lidl store in Brough will open its doors has been confirmed by the supermarket. The new store on Welton Road will welcome customers from Thursday, January 15.
The supermarket will be open from 8am following a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Chairman of East Riding of Yorkshire Council, and pupils from Welton Primary School. The store will be open from 8am–10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am–4pm on Sunday.
The store will feature Lidl’s popular in-store bakery and ‘Middle of Lidl’ aisle, as well as customer facilities including toilets with baby-changing stations. Outside, there will be a 112-space car park with including electric vehicle chargers and space for bicycles.
The store is located on the land North of the roundabout where Welton Road meets Moor Road and Myrtle Way. Work on the site began last Spring.
Liam Schofield, Regional Head of Property at Lidl GB, has said: “We’re thrilled to be joining the community in Brough and are excited to welcome the first shoppers through our doors. We’ve been creating Lidl fans across Yorkshire and are excited to now bring our much-loved products to shoppers here.
“Thank you to everyone who has played a part in helping to make this store a reality. It’s always an exciting moment when we’re finally able to see our plans come to life and make a difference to local communities.”
Plans for the a supermarket on the site were first approved by East Riding Council in 2022. Despite being approved, the plans were not without their critics, with more than 140 objections being submitted against the scheme.
The concerns largely regarded the location of the store. Speaking at the 2022 planning meeting when the plans were discussed, Dale ward councillor, Terry Gill said: “When I’ve asked people about this they say they’d love a Lidl because it would bring a bit more competition, but when I tell them where it will be they ask if I’m joking.”
In 2024, a further planning application was submitted to the council which offered a number of small changes to the already approved plans. The later application, which was also approved, suggested building the store slightly further South, albeit on the same site, in order to provide more space between the store and the properties to the North.
The new store is set to create up to 40 new jobs in the East Yorkshire town. As part of Lidl GB’s commitment to renewable energy and carbon emissions reduction, some of the store’s power will be captured from solar panels on the roof.
