Tracey Dennison, who works at Hull Royal Infirmary, has travelled to The Gambia for the past six years

A kind-hearted woman working with surgical patients at Hull Royal Infirmary has generously donated enough rice to feed more than 200 children and an entire west African village for more than a month. Tracey Dennison, a senior perioperative support worker in theatres and recovery, recently returned from The Gambia, where she was able to support children and families living in poverty.

Doctors, anaesthetists and other members of the theatres team at the hospital backed her appeal. Tracey said: “The children were just so excited when they saw I’d brought them colouring books, pens and pencils and other small gifts.

“And thanks to the generosity of staff at the hospital who donated money, I was able to pay to take extra luggage to carry lots of donations. I just want to say a massive thank you to everyone who helped me and donated to my appeal.”

For the past six years, Tracey has been making trips to The Gambia in honour of her parents, who dedicated 25 years to assisting school children at Living World of Faith World Changers in the west African country. However, due to the ongoing cost of living crisis, it was becoming increasingly challenging for Tracey to afford the purchase of pens, colouring books, pencils, cards and stickers, as well as the cost of extra luggage to transport these gifts for the children.

This year, before embarking on her seventh journey, Tracey reached out to her colleagues for assistance and was overwhelmed by the generosity of NHS staff who were eager to lend a hand.

She added: “The response was just fantastic and I’m so grateful to everyone who helped. They’ve helped make a lot of people so much less fortunate than us very happy.”
