A joint search response to the tragic incident at Withernsea has been taking place, with emergency workers this morning seen scouring areas of the beach and sea defences.
Humberside Police confirmed on Friday night that two people, including a 67-year-old man, had been recovered from the sea and had sadly died. They said one person was still missing.
A major search and rescue operation was launched just after 3pm on Friday when the alarm was raised about “a number of people in difficulty in the sea”. Searches resumed this morning for a person still missing.
HM Coastguard said the search was stood down at about 12.30am and started again at about 6.30am. Those involved in the search are having to work in freezing conditions, contending with snowfall and bitter temperatures, as they conduct a sweep of the beach front, the huge rock armoury that defends Withernsea’s sea wall, and the steps up to the town’s Pier Towers.
