But what was going on closer to home, in Hull and East Yorkshire? We have had a look through the archives and uncovered many nostalgic photographs of the era.
Among them are a protest against cucumbers, an archaeological dig in Old Town, and the construction of the Hull Daily Mail offices on Beverley Road.
