Nine keys points from the rescue operation
This is everything we know about the huge multi-agency search and rescue operation so far
- The large-scale operation involves numerous agencies across air and ground. These include HM Coastguard, the RNLI, Yorkshire Ambulance Service, Humberside Police, and Humberside Fire and Rescue.
- The search area is being covered by air, with both a search and rescue helicopter and a fixed-wing aircraft from HM Coastguard circling overhead. Rescue teams from Withernsea, Hornsea, and Hull Coastguard are also involved in the effort.
- RNLI assets include the inshore lifeboat from Withernsea and the all-weather lifeboat from Bridlington, providing essential resources. Hornsea Inshore Rescue also responded by sending its 4×4 vehicle with a casualty care crew.
- The rescue is being carried out in “horrendous conditions” with plummeting temperatures and a current snow and ice warning in effect. This severe weather significantly complicates the efforts of the emergency teams on the ground and at sea.
- Hornsea Inshore Rescue reported that their own lifeboat launch was impossible due to the severe conditions. They noted three-meter high waves were breaking on their slipway, which were strong enough to knock their tractor and trailer sideways.
- The extreme weather follows a second snow and ice warning issued for parts of East Yorkshire just hours before the incident. The forecast predicts “frequent heavy snow showers” moving in from the North Sea.
- Met Office chief meteorologist Jason Kelly said the country is entering a “much colder period” with Arctic air pushing south. This is bringing well-below-average temperatures, likely snow accumulations, and a risk of widespread ice.
- Humberside Fire and Rescue confirmed receiving a call around 3:40 pm and asked the public to avoid the central promenade area. This precaution is necessary due to the heavy movement and positioning of emergency vehicles.
- In a display of community spirit, The Alexandra Hotel in Withernsea has offered support to all personnel involved in the search and rescue. They are providing free hot drinks and a warm place for coastguard and ambulance crews.
