The Tigers head to the Steel City for a Boxing Day showdown against the struggling Owls

Striker Oli McBurnie is prepared for a hostile welcome when he makes his first return to the Steel City since joining Hull City in the summer.

McBurnie, who played more than 150 times for Sheffield Wednesday’s bitter rivals United, will be a key member of the City squad looking to make it three successive away wins when they meet at Hillsborough on Boxing Day in front of a sold-out travelling contingent of nearly 4,000 Tigers.

The 29-year-old is back among the goals after a nine-game spell out injured between mid-October and early December, and will hope to get one over on the Owls in a big Yorkshire derby on the most traditional of football days.

“I’ve not thought about that one, but it’ll be nice. I never got to play in a Sheffield derby because we (United) were always in the Premier League when they were in the Championship, and then when we were in the Championship, they were in League One, so it was unfortunate that I never got to play in one of them games,” the striker told Hull Live. “It’ll be a nice game. I’m sure I’ll get a nice welcome.”

Wednesday’s problems have been well-documented in recent times, with the Owls falling into administration earlier this season, which saw them hit with points deductions and a certain relegation to League One.

“They’re having their struggles at the minute, which you don’t like to see at any football club, even them. We’ll go there, but at the end of the day, it’s a game for us that we want to go and get three points in. And on Boxing Day, start that little hectic run off with three points.”
