Humberside Police launch Operation Yuletide – what it means for you this Christmas – Hull Live

‘With homes filled with gifts and shopping areas busier than ever, the risk of theft and burglary increases’

Everything you need to know about efforts to prevent retail crime this Christmas

  • During the festive period, Humberside Police are working with retailers to fight and prevent crime in Hull city centre. Officers will will be patrolling the streets to ensure the force has a highly visible presence around the city.
  • Retail crime includes offences such as shoplifting, and abuse or intimidation of shop workers. It can involve opportunistic theft, such as taking items without paying, or organised criminal groups targeting high value goods. These crimes don’t just affect businesses, they impact staff, customers, and communities.
  • This work links to the Government’s Neighbourhood Policing Guarantee, which aims to improve the relationship between the police and the communities they operate in. We saw this in action in Orchard Park earlier in the year.
  • Speaking about the often heightened threat during the festive period, Chief Inspector Alasdair Booth, force lead for retail crime, said: “Christmas is a time for giving, but unfortunately, it can also be a time when criminals take advantage. With homes filled with gifts and shopping areas busier than ever, the risk of theft and burglary increases.”
  • We went along with PC Mohammed and PCSO Wallgate on patrol in the city centre to see their work first hand.
