Everything you need to know about Humber Bridge Toll

  • The Humber Bridge is soon to have a new fully automated tolling system, called Humber Bridge Toll. In place of the present booths and HumberTAG lanes, a state-of-the-art system will be in use, with a new tolling gantry spanning all lanes on the bridge.
  • The work to install the system, which bridge bosses have said will mean a better experience for motorists, began in March. It was originally due to launch before the end of 2025.
  • In November, the Humber Bridge announced it was putting back the launch to ensure a “smooth rollout” of the system. The majority of the work to install the infrastructure for Humber Bridge Toll has been taking place at night, to keep disruption to drivers to a minimum.
  • Humber Bridge Toll will see the removal of the remaining toll booths on the bridge and the introduction of key technologies including automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) and AI technology to monitor traffic crossing the bridge. It will also replace the existing HumberTAG that was introduced in 2015.
  • Earlier this year, Andrew Arundel, chief executive officer at the Humber Bridge, said the new automated tolling system would “significantly enhance user experience at the Humber Bridge”. He said: “By completely overhauling the payment process, crossing the bridge will be easier and payment will be much more convenient.”
  • Now bridge bosses have now urged motorists not to leave it to the last minute to prepare for the changes. A series of guides have been created for people to download, depending on their own bridge crossing need.
