A woman has admitted killing the parents of a young boy in a car crash in East Yorkshire.

A 33-year-old man and a 32-year-old woman died, and a two-year-old child was seriously injured in the head-on crash on the A165 near Bridlington on 7 May 2021.

Laila Barnard-Wigley, 27, pleaded guilty to two counts of causing death by careless driving at Hull Crown Court on Tuesday. She will be sentenced on 9 January 2026.

Barnard-Wigley, of Thoresby Avenue in Bridlington, had charges of causing death and injury by dangerous driving dropped at a previous court hearing in 2023, when the judge instructed the jury to find her not guilty due to insufficient evidence.

In the earlier trial, evidence was heard that Barnard-Wigley’s car had aquaplaned after hitting water on the road following heavy rainfall.

Sgt Rob Mazingham, from Humberside Police’s serious collisions unit, said: “This was a truly tragic incident that left a little boy orphaned and devastated families who continue to grieve and attempt to navigate a life without their loved ones.

“This has been an extremely complex, and lengthy investigation, and I would like to thank the families of the deceased for their patience, and strength throughout the entire process.”
