The discount retailer replaces Homebase which closed down earlier this year
A new 29,000-sq ft discount store is set to open in Hessle this weekend. B&M says its opening at the former Homebase off Sainsbury Way will be a “welcome boost to the local economy” and is creating 50 jobs for local people.
B&M took the site on following the closure of Homebase at the start of this year which had operated next to Sainsbury’s since 1984. After undergoing a “comprehensive internal and external refurbishment programme”, the new store will officially open its doors at 8am on Saturday, November 29.
B&M already operates a number of stores in Hull and the surrounding area including at Willerby Shopping Park, Kingston Retail Park, St Andrew’s Retail Park off Hessle Road, Prospect Shopping Centre, North Point Shopping Centre, Sutton Fields, Holderness Road, and Victoria Retail Park in Beverley.
The retailer says customers “can expect to find a wide variety of branded groceries for the best possible price including a range of food, drink and pet food”. There will also be “a fantastic selection of quality health and beauty products, homeware, electricals, DIY essentials, toys, games, gifts and plenty more to explore”.
The Sainsbury Way site provides a space of 29,163-sq ft and includes an 8,747-sq ft garden centre selling hundreds of plant varieties and garden essentials. The store manager from B&M said: “We’re feeling extremely positive about the creation of more jobs for local people, and we hope customers are going to be delighted with their new store.”
Colleagues at the new store were asked to nominate a local charity they think “truly deserves some VIP treatment” for the work they do for the community. They selected the team from the Hessle and Anlaby Foodbank to take centre stage and unveil the new B&M store.
Hessle and Anlaby Foodbank is a community organisation supporting individuals and families in crisis across the west Hull villages through emergency food supplies. Established during the pandemic in 2020, the foodbank has continued to meet a growing local need and now serves more than 70 families, providing essential support where it is most needed.
Donations from the community enable the foodbank to offer generous food parcels that include fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, eggs and cheese, alongside store-cupboard essentials.
The B&M store manager added: “Hessle and Anlaby Foodbank really stood out for us, so we wanted to give them some VIP treatment as a thank you for all the hard work that they have done. We hope that our donation can help them to continue the great work they do.”
