Residents have woken up to Christmas-card scenes as powdery white snowflakes settled on gardens and streets.

East Park looked particularly magical under its dusting of pure white and pupils of Malet Lambert played in the snow ahead of the school day. Elsewhere in Hull, schoolchildren have been enjoying the snowy weather and building snowmen in the Avenues.

The Met Office has issued a snow and ice warning for Yorkshire and the Humber, with large swathes of the North East also affected. Temperatures are above freezing in Hull, but the ‘feels like’ temperature is between -1C and -3C.

Friday is forecast to be similarly cold but sunny. With no more snow expected after today, anyone hoping to build a snowman should get stuck in before the weekend.
