Six Poundland stores, which were on the brink of closure, have been rescued. The chain had previously announced plans to shut 68 high street outlets by the end of 2025 as part of a strategy to revive its fortunes.

However, reports suggest that the chain has deemed six stores worth saving. This decision is part of recovery plans initiated after the company narrowly avoided collapse earlier this year, thanks to High Court approval for a significant restructuring plan, just days before it was due to run out of funds.

The scheme involves an injection of up to £60 million in new funding to keep the retailer operational and allows it to proceed with a store closure programme. This programme will result in the closure of 68 shops, affecting approximately 1,000 workers.

However, the high street giant has now confirmed that stores in Perry Barr, Dundee, Livingston, Musselburgh, Porthcawl and Andover will remain open. These stores managed to negotiate arrangements with their landlords and secure new lease agreements.

These shops had already started large clearance sales, offering discounts of up to 40% on some items. All had closed their doors permanently but will now reopen in the coming weeks.

Stores which have been saved

  • Perry Barr
  • Dundee
  • Livingston
  • Musselburgh

Stores in Livingston, Musselburgh and Porthcawl were also previously saved from closure.

In August, the chain announced a return to simple £1, £2 and £3 grocery pricing across all its UK stores as it seeks to turn around its fortunes after avoiding administration.

The discount chain has committed to pricing approximately 60% of grocery items at £1 across its stores, following changes that were trialled in a five-month pilot at 17 West Midlands stores.

The company stated this move will see it return “back to its roots” and mark “the end of additional price complexity”, with straightforward pricing set to be implemented across general merchandise and clothing ranges in the upcoming months.

In addition, seven other Poundland stores are currently holding clearance sales as they prepare to close within the next two months. These sales cover all stock in each store, including homeware, groceries, health and beauty products.

They include:

Previously, the chain announced that 28 other shops are also participating in clearance sales before their permanent closure.

The loyalty scheme, Poundland perks, has been discontinued. Poundland customers have until 15 January 2026 to use their reward vouchers.
