The Tigers boss has made a terrific start to life at the MKM Stadium

Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic has been overlooked for the October Manager of the Month award, with the crown going to Coventry City manager Frank Lampard.

City claimed an impressive 10 points from 12 in the month with wins over Sheffield United, Leicester City and Birmingham City, and were on course to make it a clean sweep until Charlton Athletic snatched a 91st-minute equaliser to claim a 1-1 draw at the MKM Stadium.

Coventry, though, took 15 points from 19 in the month, with their only blemish coming when they suffered their sole league defeat so far at Wrexham on Halloween and bagged 18 goals along the way.

Lampard beat off competition from Jakirovic, as well as Bristol City head coach Gehard Struber and former Tigers managerial target Alex Neil.

Despite not claiming the crown, being nominated was a positive for City and boss Jakirovic, given the impressive start they’ve made to the Championship season, and fair recognition for the incredible progress they’ve made, despite being without so many influential players.

The Croatian’s nomination was the first time a Tigers head coach has been up for the award since Liam Rosenior in February 2024, and comes on the back of Oli McBurnie winning Player of the Month for a blistering September.

After winning, Lampard said: “I would like to thank all the staff and all the playing squad because you can’t win the individual awards without the hard work of everybody. It’s been a really good month and now we need to continue the hard work going forward.”

Danny Wilson chairs the Sky Bet Championship Manager of the Month judging panel. He said: “What an impact Frank is having at the club. Sitting proudly at the top of the Championship, 15 points from a possible 18 and scoring freely with 18 goals. A fantastic team to watch as they play with a freedom their manager applauds and encourages.”

Sky Sports’ EFL pundit Don Goodman said: “October couldn’t have gone much better for Coventry and Frank Lampard. They have taken a commanding lead at the top of the Championship table, after picking up five wins from their six games.

“Lampard looks to have a real connection with his team and the fans, and with them excelling at both ends of the pitch, you have to believe come the end of the season, they’ll be there or there abouts”

City return to action on Saturday week when they face QPR at Loftus Road, looking to maintain their impressive opening 15 games, with Jakirovic’s men sitting fifth in the Championship following their 3-2 win over Portsmouth last time out.
