City are nestled nicely inside the Championship’s top six after 15 games of the new campaign
Hull City head coach Sergej Jakirovic admits he’s been impressed with the start his squad have made to the Championship season as the campaign reaches the final international break.
Saturday’s 3-2 win over Portsmouth, which saw the Tigers come from behind to win through Joe Gelhardt’s deft chip from a superb Charlie Hughes pass, moved City up to fifth in the league with a fifth home success.
That was their fifth win in the past seven Championship games, and in the process, saw the Tigers match their entire tally of home wins last term.
It’s been a really encouraging start to the season for a side who survived relegation on goal difference last season, and then were hit with significant transfer restrictions in the summer.
Despite that, however, Jakirovic has overseen a complete shift in performance levels, and he’s done it without a host of influential first-team players, some of whom are expected to return after the break when the Tigers will hope to maintain their fine form.
When asked to mark City’s first 15 games out of 10, Jakirovic said: “Seven, because we have a lot of places where we can improve. I think that we can play even better.
“It’s unbelievable, amazing job (done by the players), amazing. I think we deserved it because we played very good. In these six games (since the last break), OK, you can always maybe take something from Derby, but this is football, everything is possible.
“We have to continue like this. This is also a very big strength for this team. We stick together no matter who is missing, who is not available, they are fighting, and this is what they need to do.”
