It was the year of an intense heatwave, a financial crisis, and the commercial launch of supersonic passenger plane Concorde. 1976 was certainly full of many memorable moments.

The year started off with snow in January and our nostalgic pictures include children sledging at the Costello playing fields. Then there was the blistering-hot summer.

A swing bridge over the River Hull expanded so much in the heat it would not open. Fire crews had to douse it with water to cool it down.

1976 was also the year of the famous Hull Prison riots which erupted over claims of staff brutality. It ended peacefully, but two thirds of the prison were destroyed and repairs were estimated at nearly £4 million.
