Shining a light on the great work being done at the Tigers’ academy

Hull City’s academy is famed for bringing through players like Jarrod Bowen, Keane Lewis-Potter and Jacob Greaves with all three going from the MKM Stadium into the Premier League in recent seasons.

The club’s academy, which is based at Bishop Burton College, continues to do some terrific work to prepare players, not just for City‘s first team, but for careers elsewhere should they move on.

We’ve seen that recently with the likes of Andy Smith and Brandon Fleming, while Matty Jacob has gone from the academy into the first team and is now out on loan in League One with Reading.

Since the Championship season began, both Nathan Tinsdale and Cathal McCarthy have made their senior debuts in Sergej Jakirovic’s first team.

In a bid to find out more about the great work being done at Bishop Burton, and hear some of the stories from those hoping to be the next off the Tigers’ production line, Hull Live was invited to the academy to get the lowdown from those involved…

Cathal McCarthy

The Irishman only arrived from University College in Dublin earlier this summer, but after just a few days was thrust into the first team against Lincoln City in the first game of pre-season. He was then on the flight to Turkey for the training camp in Riva and hasn’t looked back since. He made his Championship debut against Blackburn Rovers and then backed it up with an appearance off the bench at Bristol City.

Cayden Cole

The young left-back is in his second year at the MKM Stadium, and continues to catch the eye after moving to City from West Ham United. Now 18, Cole talks about coming though in East London, and what it’s like to grow up as the son of former Hammers and England forward Carlton.

Bobby Moore

York-born Moore has been fast-tracked through City’s academy age groups, and aged just 16, is a regular with the Under-21s at City as he looks to make his mark. Naturally, with a name like that, he’s going to attract no shortage of attention, and it’s something that the midfielder discusses in his chat.

Chris Butt

Brought to the club in June last year, Chesterfield-born Butt is the head goalkeeping coach at the academy after replacing Neil Sullivan, who announced his retirement last summer. Butt explains his role, along with the impact of the first team demands has on him and the young players that he’s working with.

Conor Sellars

The Under-21s head coach opens up on the season so far which saw City collect their first defeat of the season against a strong Charlton Athletic outfit. Sellars talks about the impact of Andy Dawson’s new role working between the academy and first team, and how that can help the next generation impress Jakirovic.

Richard Naylor

In charge of the club’s academy, Naylor is responsible for the day-to-day running of Bishop Burton. In an extensive chat, Naylor delivers his assessment of the season so far, the continued work being done to prepare players for the step up to first team level, and the challenges that go along with a club that is regularly active in the transfer market.
