May produced a huge performance to help the Robins life the League Leaders’ Shield.
Every team has players who go under the radar. Tyrone May is one of Hull KR’s.
The halfback rarely gets the headlines at Rovers, but his importance can’t be understated.
Ironically, it’s only now, after scoring two crucial tries in a win that secured silverware, that May gets his flowers.
But he does deserve them. May does a lot in the background for the Robins, organising plays that allow others to shine. Beyond that, he’s a very good defender too and from a halfback perspective, he’s one of the best in the league.
Perhaps one frustration with May is his lack of run threat, and it’s a valid one when you see the threat he has when he decides to take the ball in himself. After his brace against Warrington, Willie Peters hopes he will have the belief to back himself more often.
“He holds our attack together,” Peters said. “He’s the one when we have our sine meetings, he leads all that. Mikey is Mikey and you can’t teach what Mikey’s got. But Tyrone is very, very intelligent, and Mikey’s learning a lot from him.
“What he needs to do more is run the ball because he’s dangerous. Hopefully tonight gives him a bit more confidence and belief to to run the ball because sometimes I think you can just get too caught up in traffic organising, cop directing.
“He’s a dangerous runner. When we signed him I pictured him going with that drive tonight and taking the line on.”
