John Egan is keen to see Hull City continue to build a connection between the players and supporters as the Tigers look to secure a second home win of the season this weekend.

The Republic of Ireland international bagged his first goal of the season last Saturday when he fired in a 97th-minute equaliser to salvage a draw at Swansea City.

Attention for City now turns to the visit of promotion favourites Southampton to the MKM Stadium on Saturday afternoon, with the Tigers hunting a first win in four attempts.

Boss Sergej Jakirovic believes the staff and players owe the supporters a performance after a dismal 3-0 loss to Blackburn Rovers in their last MKM Stadium outing almost a month ago, and Egan has echoed that belief.

“Yeah, we owe the supporters every week. Paying money travelling down to Swansea. It’s incredible. They backed us and they’ll keep backing us,” the experienced defender said.

“Even last year, when I came in, we were in a tough place as a club down around the bottom of the table, and they turned up every week and gave us massive support.

“It’s a well-backed football club, we know that as players. In the Oxford game, we got them off their seats at home. We gave them a really good 90 minutes of football, and the more we can do that this season, we can build a proper connection as players, fans and everyone.”

The last-gasp draw in South Wales ended a run of successive defeats for City, who are still finding their feet in the early weeks of the season after another major summer of change both in the manager’s office and dressing room.

Egan is confident that City are improving, albeit so early on in the fledgling campaign and is relishing a big contest against the Saints.

“You learn from every game,” he said. “We’re learning from games we win and we’re learning from games we draw and lose. It’s about trying to improve as a player and as a team. Every day we go training, every game, trying to go out there and win the game, but by doing it with a game plan.

“We are improving as a team, we just have to keep our heads down and focus on the next game and get the result. They’re all big ones, and it’s good to be back home now in front of our own fans, so I’m looking forward to it.”
