The ‘Canadian Messi’ is edging closer to a long-awaited return to the first team picture
Hull City star Liam Millar has been given the green light to return to full contact training in what is a huge boost to head coach Sergej Jakirovic and his squad.
The 25-year-old Canadian winger has been sidelined since suffering a season-ending ACL injury in the early stages of the draw with Burnley last October, but is now closing in on a return to Championship action after almost a year out.
Millar was due back in full training on Monday with the rest of the squad at Cottingham as Jakirovic prepares his players for the first game after the international break at Swansea City on Saturday, looking to halt a run of successive defeats suffered against Blackburn Rovers and Bristol City.
The trip to South Wales will likely come too soon for the former Liverpool youngster, but a return to the matchday squad against Southampton at the MKM Stadium on Saturday week could be possible.
Having Millar back and available for selection is a real shot in the arm for City, who welcomed back Mohamed Belloumi in the latter stages of the defeat to Blackburn Rovers last month.
Belloumi continued his recovery with a brilliant brace in the 5-1 thrashing of Birmingham City last week, playing just over an hour for the Under-21s alongside returning skipper Lewie Coyle at the MKM Stadium.
In a desperate twist of fate, Belloumi suffered a similar injury just two weeks after Millar’s season was ended against the Clarets when he damaged his ACL late on at Oxford United on Bonfire Night.
The return to fitness of Millar and Belloumi leaves just Eliot Matazo as a long-term absentee, and it’s expected he will be fit to return to action from his ACL injury around Christmastime.
Millar’s good news keeps coming, too, after announcing that he and his wife, Daniela, were expecting their third baby in the next few months, joining daughters Reina and Valencia.
