Head coach Sergej Jakirovic will welcome back Charlie Hughes for the trip to Bristol City on Saturday, while Lewie Coyle could feature in a matchday squad for the first time this season.

Hughes missed last Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to Blackburn Rovers after falling victim to the illness that swept through the camp last week, but he will take the place of Cathal McCarthy, who made his debut alongside John Egan in the middle of Hull City‘s back four.

As many as 12 players were hit by the virus, which has since claimed Enis Destan, while Akin Famewo suffered from it but will be sidelined with a calf injury until after the international break.

City hope Amir Hadziahmetovic will be registered in time to face the Robins at Ashton Gate, but it’s likely he will start on the bench with Matt Crooks still missing, meaning John Lundstram and Regan Slater would likely retain their spots in midfield.

It’s hoped that club skipper Coyle will be fit enough to return to the bench in what would be his first appearance of the seaso,n adding some welcome depth alongside Mohamed Belloumi, David Akintola and Kyle Joseph.

The Tigers will still be without Semi Ajayi, Liam Millar and Eliot Matazo. Ajayi and Millar are both expected back after the international break, while Matazo continues his recovery from an ACL injury he picked up in February in Cardiff.

Elsewhere, it’s likely Jakirovic will keep faith with the attacking trio of Joel Ndala, Kasey Palmer and Joe Gelhardt playing behind frontman Oli McBurnie.
