Former Aston Villa playmaker Lee Hendrie believes a return to Portsmouth would be a smart move for Abu Kamara this summer, a year on from leaving Fratton Park.

The Hull City winger excelled on the South Coast, helping the Blues win the League One title and secure promotion to the Championship, but joined the Tigers in a big-money deal from Norwich City on deadline day last summer.

Kamara endured a mixed campaign in East Yorkshire, emerging as the Tigers’ frontline winger following ACL injuries to fellow summer arrivals Mohamed Belloumi and Liam Millar, starting 25 games.

Despite his difficulties throughout what was a desperately disappointing campaign for City, Kamara notched up five goals and three assists in his 36 outings overall, including an impressive brace in a captivating 3-3 draw with Leeds United.

While Kamara is more than content at City, it’s understood there is interest from Pompey in the 21-year-old, though any potential deal would not be anywhere near the figures paid by the MKM Stadium outfit last summer. It remains to be seen if the Tigers would be open to doing business.

“I do think Abu Kamara is a good potential signing for Portsmouth as he’s a player that really does need game time,” Hendrie told FLW when discussing Kamara.

“Obviously, you’re not guaranteed game time anywhere, but when he was at Portsmouth, he was a really good fit. He’s one with potential, there’s definitely no doubt about that, and I think Portsmouth will need players throughout the season as they have arguably less squad depth. (The lack of squad depth) might just give him more opportunities to go and prove what he is capable of doing.”
