A new car park has added 52 extra spaces for Brough railway station to cope with increasing demand.
The facility, which is located on the south side of the railway crossing on Skillings Lane, provides a direct link to the station via a public footpath north of the train line.
The Brough South Consortium developed the car park in response to a shortage of parking at the station, which has seen a significant rise in users in recent years. This surge in demand led to many commuters parking in nearby residential areas, causing congestion and annoyance for local residents.
Ian Hodges, director of Horncastle Group PLC – the lead developer on the £200m Brough South scheme and a member of the Brough South Consortium – said that the car park offers substantial benefits to both train users and the wider community.
“Brough is a popular and growing town, and the station is very convenient for people from Brough and the surrounding villages wanting to travel by train,” he said. “Unfortunately, however, the parking facilities have not kept pace with the increasing demand and that has caused people to park in nearby residential streets, producing significant congestion. We understood that Brough South could add to the issue if we didn’t manage it, and following discussions with East Riding of Yorkshire Council it became clear creating an additional car park as part of the Brough South scheme would be the best solution.
“So, as a responsible developer that is what we have done. The new car park on Skillings Lane should facilitate more people using Brough train station, while reducing congestion in the western end of the town.”
The project was carried out by Hessle civil engineering firm CR Reynolds Ltd and the car park is now under the management of Apcoa Park and Control – the same company that operates the existing car parks at the station.
From Monday to Friday, parking charges align with the existing car parks (£5.80 per day), but on Saturdays, this reduces to £3 per day and parking is free on Sundays.
