The Met Office has now issued an alert covering all of our region

A 19-hour weather warning has now been put in place for Hull and East Yorkshire ahead of the arrival of Storm Amy. The first named storm of the season is set to bring a “period of strong and gusty winds” on Saturday.

The Met Office initially issued weather warnings for western parts of Britain earlier this week, including an amber-level alert in areas of Scotland which are set to be the worst affected. However, it has today (Friday) issued a yellow-level wind warning covering eastern and southern parts of England and Wales. As such, the entire UK is now subject to various weather warnings relating to Storm Amy.

In its warning for our area, which will be in effect between midnight and 7pm on Saturday, the Met Office says: “West to southwesterly winds will strengthen and become rather gusty on Saturday, with gusts of 45-55 mph possible in places, and perhaps 60-65 mph along some exposed coasts, especially in the west, and briefly over more exposed hills inland. Winds should then gradually ease later on Saturday.”

It adds that some bus and train services could be affected and it is likely “some coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities will be affected by spray and/or large waves”. Some “short term loss of power and other services is possible” too and there may be delays for high-sided vehicles with restrictions likely on exposed routes such as bridges.

The forecast

Storm Amy will begin to arrive in our region on Friday afternoon with a band of heavy rain expected associated with the weather system. Winds will also strengthen, becoming strong with gales by late afternoon. Overnight into Saturday, this rain is expected to clear but it will be a “very windy night” with clear spells and further showers.

Early on Saturday, rain will clear to leave a mixture of sunny spells and showers. It will stay windy throughout the day. It’ll be a similar story on Sunday with more showers expected and remaining windy but “less so than Friday and Saturday”.

Throughout this period temperatures will peak between 14 and 18C with overnight lows typically between 9 and 11C.
