
“Jon’s resilience and commitment have been truly inspiring”
A Hull gas engineer who lost almost everything is now preparing to return to work, thanks to his determination and the support of local services. Jon saw his life unravel and lost his job, his tools, and eventually his home.
Facing the uncertainty of homelessness and wanting to overcome addiction, Jon reached out for help and found it with Louise Mullen, a work coach at the Hull Jobcentre. Jon was accepted into a rehabilitation centre offering a structured 12-step programme.
The supportive environment helped Jon focus on recovery and begin rebuilding his life. Earlier this month, Jon took a major step forward to regaining employment by enrolling in an ACS Accredited training course.
This is required to work in the industry and gain Gas safe status, certificates are valid for five years, after which they must undergo reassessment. Jon’s previous certificate had expired.
Though unpaid, the course was essential for Jon to regain his professional certification and return to the industry he is passionate about. This helped gain his chance of employment with a promise of his old job back.
Another one of the biggest challenges Jon faced was the loss of his tools—vital for any engineer to work. With guidance and support from Louise, the funding via the flexible support fund was secured to help Jon replace the equipment he needed to start up again.
The flexible support fund is discretionary and designed to remove and address barriers to employment. Now, Jon is set to start work again, marking a powerful milestone in his journey from rock bottom to looking to the future.

Jon’s story is a reminder that with the right support, people can rebuild their lives and careers. His courage and determination serve as an inspiration to others facing similar challenges.

“I always say there is a huge amount of support in the community, it needs people to take that, what can be a difficult step, and ask for help. Work coaches are great for having the local knowledge, often directly being able to refer a customer in the jobcentre as locally, jobcentres are community spaces with providers on site to support people.
“The work coaches can help and signpost with whatever barrier exists, but they need people to be open and willing to move forward. I wish Jon every success in his future.”
