The City number nine has been a roaring success in the early weeks of the season
Oliver McBurnie is on fire for Hull City, according to former Aston Villa star Lee Hendrie, who admits to being seriously impressed with what he’s seen from the striker.
McBurnie has been in scintillating form for City following his summer move after leaving Las Palmas and notched a brace on Tuesday night as the Tigers roared back from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw against Preston North End, taking his tally in Black and Amber to seven, with six of those coming in the Championship.
His display at Vicarage Road last weekend saw him named in the EFL’s Team of the Week for a second successive week and for the third time in the opening weeks of the campaign, and you wouldn’t bet against him making the midweek edition after another stellar showing for his new club.
City spent the entire summer chasing the 28-year-old striker and beat off stiff competition from a host of other clubs, including his former paymasters, Sheffield United and Swansea City, and so far, that very public courting has been worth every second, with his brace in midweek overtaking last season’s top scorer, Joao Pedro, who mustered just six.
The 28-year-old will be desperate to add to his tally this weekend when he comes up against the Blades for the first time since leaving for La Liga following their Premier League relegation.
“He has been absolutely on flames. He really has. He looks like he’s enjoying his football,” Hendrie told FLW. “He looks fit, he looks bright, he looks sharp, and he looks like he’s really got a point to prove, and that’s what I’ve noticed about him.
“He’s always been that sort of player. I’ve watched him as such a young player back in the day and I’ve always thought that he’s got lots of potential.
“I think he’s really showing it and enjoying his football. The clubs that have been linked with him will be thinking, I wish we had pushed and pushed to get him in because he has really hit the ground running.”
