Rhyse Martin will play against Leeds Rhinos for the first time on Sunday, but only after being left in a dark place earlier this week.
The backrower is free to play for Hull KR this weekend after a tribunal hearing threw out a Grade E charge for unnecessary contact with an injured player.
Martin, who has only just returned from a four-month injury absence, was facing a six-match ban for the incident before he was found not guilty.
However, coach Willie Peters admitted the sequence of events impacted the forward and highlighted the recent high-profile disciplinary charges against Martin and Castleford’s Liam Horne as welfare issues.
“It’s extremely taxing,” Peters said. “Rhyse was not in a good place at all. He’s just come off a four-month injury which he couldn’t control.
“If he’d done anything where I thought it was a six-match suspension or he’s put himself in that position, I could understand, but he hadn’t.
“He was down, there’s no there’s no question about that and afterwards was a massive relief.
“They need to look at how to fix players and look at the welfare stuff. We talk about the product being the number one in terms of getting more views and having the best players on the field. We’ve always said as coaches, we want fair players, and if anyone does anything intentional, that needs to be dealt with appropriately.
“But the two from the weekend to be Grade E, one player gets six weeks, who is around him now? Cas will be but is there anyone from the RFL helping these players.
“They want to play. If it’s not in the spirit of the game, players deserve it, and the coaches will come down; they’ll pay their fines and have to get back in the team. But the two from the weekend, that’s what we’ve got to look at.”
Peters believes the ruling is something that needs to be reviewed.
“I certainly think that needs to be looked at,” he said. “They need to look at so many factors of what it is. Look at Liam Horne, that is not a six week suspension for that, it’s just not.
“We were fortunate we got off with Rhyse, he got a Grade A for the contact, I understand that, but it doesn’t make sense to go to a Grade E. Players aren’t deliberately going out, if they hurt someone and then show no empathy, it’s if they know and believe someone is milking it.
“What Wigan did, there’s nothing wrong with that, killing some time, but why should Liam Horne get suspended for six weeks? It’s just not right.”
