Swansea City’s director of football Richard Montague has confirmed the club are interested in bringing back striker Oliver McBurnie to South Wales.

McBurnie is a man in demand this summer after deciding to leave Las Palmas following their relegation from La Liga after his one season in Spain.

Hull City are keen to land the 29-year-old forward, while Sheffield United’s interest is now expected to fizzle out, especially if Chris Wilder loses his job at Sheffield United.

Swansea had McBurnie on their books for four years, with the Scotland international bagging 26 goals in 62 games before his near-£20m move to Bramall Lane in 2019.

Available on a free transfer after his departure from the Canary Islands, McBurnie has been enjoying a family holiday as he mulls over what comes next in his career following a season in La Liga, though City hope to make significant progress this week.

While McBurnie will technically cost nothing in terms of transfer fee, his salary is still expected to be a significant financial commitment from any club wanting to bring in the forward, which could prove to be a stumbling block.

I think everybody knows about Oli and his qualities and his situation as well,” Montague said when asked about the Swans’ interest in McBurnie.

“He is one we have spoken about and will be a name on various lists that we have. He is clearly a very, very good player but I’d be unwilling to say whether that’s progressing or has progressed any further.

“In theory, a lot of things are conceivable (the finances of the deal), but it depends on where you are not going to spend money elsewhere. Not necessarily talking about Oli McBurnie, but it’s all a puzzle where you say how much do we value a particular player, what can he add to us, and how much of our budget should we allocate to any player.”
