The Tigers have a Yorkshire derby to contend with on Boxing Day

Charlie Hughes admits his dramatic injury-time header to seal a precious 1-0 win for Hull City at Sheffield Wednesday was his highlight of last season.

The Tigers defender is preparing to mark his return to South Yorkshire on Boxing Day, with the Tigers facing the Owls on one of the landmark dates in the football calendar, and he’s been reflecting on a special moment.

City looked to be heading for a drab goalless draw back in April when Hughes popped up to angle a stunning header into the back of the net in front of 3,000 away supporters who went into delirium.

Given City would eventually stay up on goal difference, the two points gained against the Owls proved absolutely pivotal and ensured that Hughes would always have a special place in Tigers’ fans’ hearts.

“It was probably my favourite moment last year for me individually. It’d be lovely to go there and do it again, if I could,” Hughes told Hull Live.

For many, going to a game on Boxing Day conjures up special memories of years gone by and for Hughes, it’s no different as he looks forward to a big afternoon.

Hughes made his league debut for Wigan Athletic on December 26, 2022, away at Middlesbrough, going on to become a firm fixture for the Latics in the remainder of that campaign, and for that reason, he says it’ll always be a date to remember.

“Boxing Day was my debut, for Wigan, so it’s kind of stuck with me since making my first team debut on Boxing Day,” he continued. “I’ve always liked a Boxing Day game now, since then.”
