Need to know
Some people have been left mystified by the spectacular displays – but there’s an earthly explanation!
Everything you need to know
- People have been wondering what has caused the vibrantly coloured pink skies over Hull in recent nights. A number of Hull Live readers have been in touch to ask why it happens.
- It is not, as some have suggested, the Northern Lights making an appearance over East Yorkshire. The pink hue is visible across the city and much of the region.
- The spectacle is caused by powerful LED grow lights at the MKM Stadium – the home of football team Hull City and rugby league side Hull FC.. The lights are used maintain the pitch during the winter months and help it grow between matches.
- Low clouds are said to make the effect greater due to the light making them ‘glow’. Recent weather has likely intensified the pink hue.
- LED grow lights are intended to help groundsmen at the stadium get high-quality grass growth in a short space of time. They are particularly useful in colder months, and when there is a lack of natural light.
