Acun Ilicali has been speaking about Hull City’s transfer plans

Hull City owner Acun Ilicali has promised to try ‘make the fans happy’ in the January transfer window after admitting the club will look to add to their squad in the new year.

The Tigers remain under a transfer fee restriction imposed by the EFL which prevents them from paying fees for new signings until next summer. The club managed the restrictions very well in the summer to add a host of new faces including Joe Gelhardt on loan and Oli McBurnie, with both making a telling impact on the season so far.

Currently sat sixth in the Championship despite having endured bad luck with injuries which has prevented manager Sergej Jakirovic from putting out arguably his best XI so far this season, City have now lost Gelhardt for over a month, but have welcomed back McBurnie, Mo Belloumi and Liam Millar, adding real quality back into the matchday squad.

The return of those players among others was highlighted by Ilicali when pointing to Jakirovic being given more options in the new year, but while that is the case, the owner admits that once he again he is expecting to try freshen things up further, as he has done every transfer window since arriving.

Speaking to Sky Sports about the club’s transfer window plans, Ilicali said; “About January, of course we will have some touches, but our new transfers will be the ones coming back from injury. We have a fantastic squad. I want to talk to you after the squad is fit, you will see how many good players we have.

“In the transfer window, we will have of course touches as usual because I love to bring new players always. We will try to make our fans happy.”

It won’t come as a surprise to hear Jakirovic would welcome new recruits in January despite his sizeable squad, with a couple of additions seen as ideal reinforcements for the challenge ahead in the second half of the campaign as City continue to push for a play-off place.

The level of any squad strengthening will depend on the fitness of the squad in January and the limited options open to the club amid their ongoing transfer restrictions.
