The Tigers have some key decisions to make as the transfer window edges closer
Head coach Sergej Jakirovic would like to see Hull City tie down three of their key players to new contracts in a move to reward their fine form.
John Egan, Lewie Coyle and Regan Slater are three of the players out of contract in the summer, and while the club have the option to extend each one by 12 months, Jakirovic knows just how important the trio are and would like to see fresh deals secured.
Both Slater and Coyle recently passed the 200-game mark for the Tigers, having arrived to play their part in the League One title-winning campaign in 2020, and were presented with commemorative plaques by owner Acun Ilicali prior to Friday night’s 4-1 loss at home to Middlesbrough.
Slater’s form in recent weeks has seen him become one of the first names on the teamsheet, and Coyle, after a couple of struggles with injury, remains the first-choice right-back and club skipper, with sources indicating to Hull Live that talks have opened with the 30-year-old.
Egan was signed from Burnley in January, agreeing an 18-month contract at the MKM Stadium and has become a firm fixture under Jakirovic.
Contract talks remain in the hands of sporting director Jared Dublin, but Jakirovic has stressed how crucial the trio have been in the first half of what has been a positive campaign for the Tigers.
“This is a question for Jared (Dublin),” Jakirovic told Hull Live. “We will start to talk for sure because they’re very important players for our team and our club as well, so we will start for sure.
“Of course, they already proved this season for me since I’m here that they are very, very important players for this team, so I will be happy if we extend the contracts with them.”
