Trading standards is urging residents to take care when dealing with cold callers

Residents have been warned to be on their guard from rogue traders operating in the area. East Riding of Yorkshire Council trading standards is urging residents to take care when dealing with cold callers, following a rise in complaints about so-called traders offering to install home insulation.

The council has issued a list of key hallmarks to look out for when traders come calling, with tell-tale signs coming from those offering last chance sales, OAP discounts or otherwise too good to be true deals. High pressure tactics, such as claims that the work must be carried out urgently within a 14-day cancellation period are also often used, while supposed small jobs at a low price may drastically change into big issues.

Trading Standards officers say residents can employ out a number of measures to keep themselves safe, with the top option being to asking friends and neighbours for recommendation. They can also seek out well-known local businesses if they need work to be carried out.

They can also obtain multiple written quotations, which clearly outline the scope of work to be undertaken. People should also make their own checks, to confirm that the trader is at the address provided, and if the trader claims to be a member of a trade association, clarify this with the association.

The council also say residents should always avoid making large payments upfront, and never in cash, cheque or bank transfer. Instead pay on completion, either by debit or credit card.

Councillor Lyn Healing, East Riding of Yorkshire Council cabinet member for communities and public protection said: “We know that at this time of year many people are eager to install insulation to keep their homes warm. However, it is vital to take precautions to avoid falling victim to rogue traders, who may install substandard or overpriced work.”
