The new Community Shop will open next week
Key facts about Hull’s soon-to-open Community Shop
- A new Community Shop in Bransholme will open its doors on Thursday, December 11 at 9:30 am. The shop is set to open within the North Bransholme Community Centre on Lothian Way.
- Community Shops are membership-only stores that sell surplus food products at discounted prices, including a range which sees fruit, vegetables and bread on offer for only 20p.
- Plans for the store were revealed in a planning application recently submitted to Hull City Council which sought permission for a change of use of the community centre which has been leased out to the Paul Ingle Boxing Club, which will now share the site with the Community Shop.
- The store will be the 15th of its kind and will receive support from frozen foods firm, McCain Foods. Having already funded a Community Shop in Eastfield, near Scarborough, McCain Foods is strengthening its partnership with Community Shop through product donations that will support the new Bransholme store.
- News of the store’s arrival in Bransholme has been celebrated by the Leader of Hull City Council, Cllr Mike Ross, who has said: “We’re really pleased to be able to help Community Shop open in our city. The great work they do helps people out with cost of living pressures, but they also make sure that things that might otherwise go to waste can be bought at a really low price. The Community Hub will offer support and development to allow members from the nearby area to build new skills, and their Community Kitchen will provide meals cooked by local people for local people. As a council, we’re doing as much as we can to help people tackle rising prices, so initiatives like this are a great asset.”
