Tributes have been paid to the first female leader of Hull City Council who has died following a short illness, aged 77.

Honorary Alderman Simone Butterworth led the council from 2002 to 2003.

Current leader Councillor Mike Ross described Ms Butterworth as a “trailblazer.”

He added: “Simone was someone who was dedicated to the city of Hull and the people she was elected to serve. She was renowned for her tenacity, always pursuing whatever cause she got behind with passion and belief.”

Ross added Ms Butterworth’s commitment to the city and community was “unswerving”.

Ms Butterworth was first elected as a councillor in the Avenue ward in 1994.

Among other appointments, she was a board director for Hull Truck Theatre.

Flags at The Guildhall have been flying at half-mast as mark of respect, the council said.
