The Tigers are safely nestled inside the Championship’s top six

Former Hull City star Robert Snodgrass believes Oli McBurnie and Joe Gelhardt will be pivotal to any hopes the Tigers have of sustaining a promotion push.

City sit fifth in the Championship after a blistering start to the new season under Sergej Jakirovic, and both McBurnie and Gelhardt have played major roles.

The pair have bagged 14 goals between them to help City become the league’s second top scorers behind leaders Coventry City, as well as notching up six assists.

McBurnie has six of his goals in the Championship, but has missed the last five games through injury with Jakirovic hoping he’ll be fit enough to return shortly after the international break.

In his absence, Gelhardt has picked up the mantle and netted five times in his last six games, including the winner and assist against Portsmouth last time out.

Snodgrass, who notched up a little over a half-century of appearances for the Tigers, says the connection between the two is impressive and key to the Tigers’ hopes.

“I’ve been really impressed with them this season,” he told Boylesports, reflecting on what’s been a fine start to the new campaign.

“They’ve built a squad and their recruitment has been spot on with a signing like Oli McBurnie. You can see the connection he’s got with Joe Gelhardt, but you need a striker to try and get you 15 to 20 goals, and I believe McBurnie is that man. He’s a really good fit for Hull (City).

“They’re doing really well, and if they’re going to have any sort of promotion push, I think those two lads will be really pivotal to them. With promotion-winning sides over the years, January is also key in terms of what signings you try and bring in to try to ease the burden on players like McBurnie and Gelhardt.”
