Residents should ‘avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water’

A flood alert is in place for the Hull area following a night of heavy rainfall. Areas covered by the alert are the Lower River Hull area, including Cottingham, Kirk Ella, Anlaby, Hessle, Bransholme, and Kingston upon Hull.

According to the Government website: “River levels remain high today which may lead to flooding. Take care and avoid walking, cycling or driving through flood water.” The alert was updated as of 9.30am this morning (Saturday, November 15)

The Environment Agency provides 3 types of flood warning: Flood alert (flooding is possible), flood warning (flooding is expected) and severe flood warning (flooding could be a risk to life and significant disruption to communities). Today’s alert is the lowest category, but should still be taken seriously.

The alert further stated: “Rainfall from Storm Claudia is easing and levels are expected to continue falling. We are closely monitoring the situation.”

Similarly, a flood alert has been issued for the River Foulness and Market Weighton catchment. The alert said: “Rainfall associated from Storm Claudia is easing this morning, however, levels are expected to remain high this weekend. Locations most affected will be low lying land and roads near the River Foulness and the Market Weighton Canal and their tributaries.”

In Bridlington, residents are being advised to ‘avoid beaches and coastal promenades, which may be flooded’. The full alert states: “Flooding is possible between 1:30pm and 5:30pm. High tides as well as strong winds and large waves caused by Storm Claudia may lead flooding and wave overtopping today.

Weather conditions are expected to remain stormy throughout Saturday. Locations most affected will be coastal roads and footpaths along the North Sea coast from Bridlington to Barmston.”

According to the Environment Agency, when a flood alert is issued, there are a number of things you should do. This includes:
