You can have a bite to eat whilst taking in the stunning scenery

I recently went for a walk in the gorgeous woodlands at Humber Bridge Country Park. The beauty spot is a favourite haunt of mine and there is probably nowhere better to see the vibrant colours of the leaves at this time of the year.

But stomping around in the woods is quite hungry business and soon I was in dire need of revival. Eating out options in the immediate vicinity are limited, but there is a gastropub-type place called The Country Park Inn on Hessle Foreshore.

Often busy in the summer, it is popular for its impressive views of the Humber Bridge and estuary. I just hoped the food would be as good as the location.

My first impression was that it is rather quiet in the autumn months. Before I arrived, I was half expecting to have to wait for a table because we hadn’t booked in advance, but there was a perfect spot available overlooking the estuary.

And what a view! In the foreground, little birds on stilt legs plodded through the mud; behind them, the epic span of the bridge dominated the landscape.

Once you have a table, you order at the bar which was simple enough. We picked out a ‘Pensioner Special’ scampi and chips – a good deal for an older person – and a homemade curry with rice and naan bread.

The food arrived very quickly, which was good because I was ravenous. My curry was garnished with fresh chillies which had a slight zesty kick without overpowering the subtler flavours.

It was a hearty curry and didn’t survive long on my plate. The sauce was fragrant and the pilau rice was very tasty.

The naan bread was nicely toasted, not overdone. It was good quality and I would definitely order it again.

My pensioner-in-tow was very happy with the scampi. I managed to pilfer a few of the chips and they were not the slightest bit bland. They weren’t greasy either, not even a little, which made me wonder if they had perhaps been cooked in an oven rather than deep-fried.

The service overall was very good, and made the whole experience even more pleasant. I will definitely return, and soon.
