The Guide went searching for ‘the pubs that nail the drinking and dining side of the equation’
The Good Food Guide, Britain’s authority on eating out since 1951, has published its inaugural list of 100 Best Pubs in Britain. Defying the doom and gloom of a background of pub closures, the Guide has set its sights on celebrating the nation’s thriving appetite for genuine pubs – and it includes one that is flying the flag for East Yorkshire.
The Pipe and Glass, at South Dalton, is the only East Riding pub that features in the list. The Good Food Guide has ranked it at number 25 out of the 100, with another Yorkshire venue, The Highland Laddie in Leeds, taking the number-one spot.
James Mackenzie, of the Pipe and Glass and the region’s only Michelin-starred chef, said: “It’s great to be recognised in the Top 100 Pubs. It’s just as important for us to serve great food alongside fine wine as it is to serve a great hand-pulled pint in a warm and welcoming atmosphere.
“It’s testament to our hard-working team that deliver great Yorkshire hospitality on a daily basis.” The Good Food Guide partnered with Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, supported by Tracklements and Koffmann’s Potatoes, in creating the definitive list of top-ranking pubs, from as far afield as Cornwall and the Highlands of Scotland.
In creating the guide, nominations from The Good Food Guide’s readers were also welcomed. This resulted in The Broad Chare, Newcastle, claiming the Readers’ Choice Award.
Despite the gloomy picture of pub closures, at the average rate of one per day in 2025, The Good Food Guide said it intended celebrating the nation’s thriving appetite for genuine pubs with proper food and proper beer – and the growing number of venues that are delivering it. Chloë Hamilton, editor of The Good Food Guide, said: “We went searching for the pubs that nail the drinking and dining side of the equation.
“It turns out the harder you look the more you find, and they’re not all hidden away in the Cotswolds. The Highland Laddie – a city-centre slam dunk – is a very good case in point.”
The list also demonstrates the importance pubs play in community. Jane Jenkins, marketing director at Timothy Taylor’s, said: “Timothy Taylor’s is delighted to have taken part in The Good Food Guide’s 100 Best Pubs campaign celebrating such quality, community-led establishments.
“Congratulations to all the winners, many of whom serve Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, the UK’s number one cask ale, and a special shout out to The Highland Laddie and the Broad Chare.” Liz Cuff, marketing director of Tracklements, said: “After the success of Britain’s Best Sunday Roasts in 2024, we’re delighted to support The Good Food Guide in celebrating Britain’s 100 Best Pubs 2025.
“The fabulous but approachable pub food on show throughout this list goes hand in hand with our award-winning condiments.” Simon Martin, group CEO and founder of The Food Heroes, of which Koffmann’s Potatoes is part, said: “We are delighted by the groundswell of support for Britain’s best pubs during these tough times for our industry.”
