The striker was the league’s best player in September

Oli McBurnie says Hull City have shown glimpses of their potential in the early weeks of the season, as he reflects on a terrific personal start to the new campaign.

City are safely slotted into mid-table with three wins, draws and defeats from their first nine games of the fledgling campaign as Championship football prepares to return after the latest international break with six games in three weeks.

McBurnie has been in electric form since joining the Tigers and scooped the Player of the Month award for his displays in September, becoming the first City player since Oscar Estupinan more than three years ago to achieve the crown.

His seven goals and three assists in all competitions have helped the Tigers to a solid start under new boss Sergej Jakirovic, which culminated in a battling 1-0 win over his former club Sheffield United before the international break, courtesy of David Akintola’s first City goal.

The 29-year-old forward will hope to continue his early-season purple patch on Saturday when the Tigers return to action at newly-promoted Birmingham City, aiming to become the first visiting side to win at St Andrew’s since April last year.

“It’s been an unbelievable start to the season for me on a personal level,” the Scotsman said. “The main thing is the team doing well, and we’re showing glimpses of what we can be and what we want to achieve.

“Chipping in with goals and assists always has a positive effect, and as a team, we’re getting to where we want to be. I’m really happy to be back in England, and I’m enjoying my football with a great bunch of lads and scoring goals.”
