She genuinely feared for her safety
A menacing bully made his ex-girlfriend’s life a misery during a nasty “reign of terror” by bombarding her with abusive insults and intimidation that left her a “shell of a person” and feeling that she had been “held emotionally hostage”. Aggressive and threatening Lewis Green endlessly stalked the woman and she “lived in a constant state of anxiety” and genuinely feared for her safety.
She suffered “persistent emotional and psychological abuse” from him and she was left shaken to her core and forced to “pick up the pieces” later, Hull Crown Court heard. Green, 33, of Darwin Road, Bridlington, but recently in custody on remand, admitted breaching a restraining order between December 20, 2024 and September 9, 2025 and stalking the woman between February 1 and September 7, 2025.
Stephen Welch, prosecuting, said that Green and the woman were previously in a relationship and they had a two-year-old child together but they later separated for 18 months. A non-molestation order was made but Green breached it and a restraining order was made at Hull Magistrates’ Court on July 15, 2024.
Just before Christmas of that year, Green started contacting the woman directly by messages, in breach of the restraining order. The woman was not concerned at this stage because the messages were friendly and apologetic.
In January and February 2025, the messages became abusive. Green wanted her to remove the restraining order but she refused. His behaviour worsened and he made comments about what she was wearing.
“He interrogated her about where she was going and who she was seeing,” said Mr Welch. “His messages became abusive. He was sending 20 to 30 messages a day.”
Green’s behaviour became more erratic and abusive and he called her insulting names. He begged her to send photographs of herself and her anxiety was raised to such an extent that she took four days off work and was put on medication.
“She eventually blocked his messages and reported the incident to the police,” said Mr Welch. Green was arrested on September 8. He made no comment during police interview.
He had convictions for 12 previous offences, all of them relating to harassment and breaching court orders. He had been jailed for 18 weeks on July 15, 2024 for breaching a non-molestation order.
The woman later said: “I have suffered persistent emotional and psychological abuse from Lewis. I have been held emotionally hostage through words, threats and volatile behaviours designed to destabilise and wear me down and prevent me from exposing his private reign of terror over the past three years.
“He has forced me to question my own thoughts, feelings and reality. He monitored my movements and online activity using false accusations to enforce the idea that he always knew what I was doing.
“My appearance was scrutinised. My clothing choices became a source of anger and accusations. I became hyper-vigilant and constantly worried I would do something to anger or upset him.
“I changed my behaviour to minimise the abuse, avoiding going out, watching what I said and how I said it. I have been subjected to namecalling, intimidation, threats to attend my property and degraded. I was vulnerable and he simply didn’t care.
“I lived in a constant state of anxiety. I genuinely feared for my safety. Lewis has shown no remorse and has shown no responsibility for how he has behaved. He is continuing to intimidate me through the justice system.
“This chapter of my life has shaken me to my core, dismantled my confidence and left me a shell of a person. I continue to pick up the pieces. I am trying to rebuild my confidence but it’s a slow process.”
Amber Hobson, mitigating, said that Green pleaded guilty before Hull Magistrates’ Court to breaching the restraining order. The case was listed for trial at the same court on October 29 but Green pleaded guilty to stalking on October 2. He regretted his behaviour and had been in custody.
Green was jailed for 17 months. The restraining order was extended for another five years.
