It was known as the ‘Golden Years’ – a time when rationing was finally over and communities were rebuilding after the devastation of World War Two.

In these nostalgic photographs, we are taken back in time to 1956. On a busy Holderness Road, we see delivery vans parked outside a street full of independent shops and bicycle riders weaving between buses and cars.

Meanwhile, in Withernsea, a queue of people are taking their cats and dogs to see the vet. In Bridlington, the lifeboat is surrounded by a crowd as it is towed down Trinity Cut for launching, having been on show at Bridlington Ladies Lifeboat Guild garden party.

There are also fascinating images of family life and childhood, showing the clothes we used to wear. Many things are familiar, but in other ways life looks very different.
