Key facts about the repair works and closures to Drypool Bridge
- A routine inspection on the major crossing point in 2024 revealed that several of the load-bearing columns had significantly deteriorated, with work needed to prevent a total bridge failure. Following the inspection, engineers planned a programme to guarantee the structure for 25 years and add a further 50 years to its operational life.
- The bridge was fully closed for over two months between September and November 2025 for the first phase of the restoration project. It successfully reopened to two-way traffic in late November, albeit with traffic management still in place in the form of narrowed lanes.
- The closure of the bridge, which aligned with the wider closure of much of Alfred Gelder Street, caused significant issues for nearby businesses such as The White Hart Pub and Food for Cowboys. The street was closed between the bridge and the junction with Lowgate to allow for pipes to be laid for the Hull District Heat Network.
- Hull City Council has announced a further 8 week full closure starting in mid-to-late May 2026. During the 8 weeks, the bridge will again be shut to all vehicles and pedestrians, for what the council say should be the final closure, subject to any unforeseen issues.
- In addition to the closure in May, the council has also announced an emergency closure from 6pm on Sunday, December 21 until 6am on Monday, December 22. Pedestrian access will be maintained during these times.
