The River Hull crossing will close for one night while temporary repairs are carried out
Drypool Bridge will be closed for one night while “emergency repairs” are carried out. The surface on part of the River Hull crossing has deteriorated due to the recent cold weather, Hull City Council has said.
A temporary repair will be carried out in the coming days to “maintain safety and prevent further deterioration”. The bridge will be closed to all traffic from 6pm on Sunday, December 21 until 6am on Monday, December 22. Pedestrian access will be maintained during these times.
The council says these timings are “weather dependent”. Councillor Mark Ieronimo, cabinet portfolio holder for transport and infrastructure at Hull City Council, said: “Safety is, and always will be, our top priority. These emergency works are essential to keep the bridge safe for all users and to prevent further damage.
“We know these works will cause disruption, but we have been working closely with Esh Construction and our specialist contractors to minimise this as much as possible. So, I’m pleased these works have been scheduled to take place overnight, to reduce the impact on traffic.
“Thank you, in advance, to residents, businesses, and road users for your continued patience and support.”
A full replacement of the carriageway will take place during the wider repair programme for the bridge. Announcement of the temporary closure comes at the same time the council revealed Drypool Bridge will be closed to all vehicles and pedestrians for eight weeks starting from mid-to-late May 2026.
It follows an initial full closure of the crossing that took place between September 15 and November 27. During this, work “progressed well” with the removal of defective concrete, essential column reconstruction, and general concrete repairs.
Hull City Council is working in partnership with local contractors Esh Construction and designers Mason Clark Associates to fix the bridge following inspections last year, which highlighted the need for major repairs to be undertaken. The temporary carriageway repairs this weekend will be carried out by specialist contractor Midland Industrial Flooring Limited on behalf of the council.
