East Riding of Yorkshire Council is inviting residents, businesses, and visitors to share their views on new design concepts
An events plaza for events, enhanced greenery, seating and safer pedestrian routes are among emerging proposals for the transformation of Hessle Square. East Riding of Yorkshire Council, in partnership with Hessle Town Council, wants residents, businesses, and visitors to share their views on new design concepts for the square.
Plans to revitalise Hessle Square and enhance its overall character first emerged in September, when the local authority launched a four-week public engagement campaign to allow people to share their views on what this should involve.
Working with Yorkshire-based company PWP Design Ltd, the council’s aim is to create a “welcoming focal point that can support economic growth and encourage pride in the community”, in a flexible space that celebrates Hessle’s heritage and supports markets, community events, and local businesses.
Potential uses now include a multi-use plaza for events, more greenery, seating, and sheltered areas, alongside safer pedestrian routes and improved accessibility. Public art, better lighting, and measures to reduce anti-social behaviour would also help create a vibrant, inclusive destination.
The design also focuses on improving walking connections, making the town centre easier to navigate, while ensuring adaptability for markets, events, and social spaces. Designed for both day and evening use, the concepts aim to be inclusive and welcoming for all, with sustainable, durable features that are easy to maintain. The council says the proposals could safeguard Hessle Square as a vibrant, accessible space at the heart of the community.
Councillor Anne Handley, East Riding of Yorkshire Council leader said “We’re proud to support communities across the region, including in Hessle. We encourage residents to take part in the survey and let us know their thoughts about the future of Hessle Square.”
The council says the project is an early-stage guide to future plans and funding. No immediate changes will happen yet, and residents’ views will shape the next steps. Residents are encouraged to take part in the survey at eryc.link/HessleSquare, which will close on Friday, January 9 2026.
The survey asks respondents why they visit the town centre, quizzing them over use of banking, shopping, hospitality, events, socialising, the library and other facilities, as well as how often they visit.
There will also be in-person engagement events throughout the consultation period. Details of these will be provided on social media. More information can be found at eastridingcommunities.commonplace.is or by contacting localgrowth@eastriding.gov.uk
The project is funded by the UK government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF). The UKSPF is a central pillar of the government’s Levelling Up agenda and provides £2.6bn of funding for local investment by March 2025. The fund aims to improve pride in place and increase life chances across the UK by investing in three priorities: communities and place, supporting local business and people and skills.
