Changes to bin collection days over Christmas and new year in Hull have been announced.
Hull City Council has urged residents to check what day they need to put their bins out for collection.
The authority also announced the city’s household waste and recycling centres would be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.
Councillor Charles Quinn, portfolio holder for environment, said: “Bin collections over Christmas and new year are slightly different, so to ensure bins are emptied, everyone should check their calendars to make sure they put their bins out on the right days.”
The festive schedule is as follows:
- Bins usually collected on Thursday 25 December will be collected on Saturday 27 December
- Friday 26 December will be Tuesday 30 December
- Tuesday 30 December will be Wednesday 31 December
- Wednesday 31 December will be Friday 2 January
- Thursday 1 January will be Saturday 3 January
- Friday 2 January will be Tuesday 6 January
- Tuesday 6 January will be Wednesday 7 January
- Wednesday 7 January will be Thursday 8 January
- Thursday 8 January will be Friday 9 January
- Friday 9 January will be Saturday 10 January
Normal collection dates resume on Tuesday 13 January.
The council said the festive season was a time when household waste typically increased by about a third and urged residents to cut down on food waste and recycle.
Quinn added: “With all the extra food, packaging and wrapping at Christmas, it’s easy for waste to pile up. But most of it can be recycled, and a lot of food waste can be avoided altogether.
“This Christmas, we’re asking everyone to plan meals carefully, use up leftovers and make sure any unavoidable food waste goes in the brown bin.”
Any excess waste can be taken to one of the city’s three household waste and recycling centres, where many unwanted items can also be donated for sale in Reuse shops, the council said.
Real Christmas trees can be recycled by being chopped up and put in the brown bin, or taken whole to one of the centres at Burma Drive, Sutton Fields and Wiltshire Road.
