The Tigers ace will hope to claim the crown for his fine displays last month
Joe Gelhardt has become the second Hull City player to be nominated for Player of the Month this season, after an electric display in November.
Gelhardt bagged four goals and an assist in his six games during the month, with his fine personal displays culminating in his 90th-minute winner at Stoke City, and he will hope to follow in the footsteps of Oli McBurnie, who won September’s crown.
The 23-year-old began the month with a well-taken strike to set City on their way to a 2-0 win at Norwich City before netting a stunning winner against Portsmouth, and the opener at QPR in what ended up being a 3-2 defeat in West London.
On loan from Leeds United, the forward started December in fine fashion, netting his eighth goal in the last 10 games to take his tally to 10 for the season, albeit in defeat to Boro last Friday night.
Unfortunately for Gelhardt and City, it looks like the in-form forward will not add to his tally again this month after suffering a calf injury against Boro.
This month’s nominations
Alex Cochrane (Birmingham City) – full-back
So dependable defensively that you often don’t notice him, Cochrane played a key role in Birmingham conceding just four times in five games. He also set up two goals from set pieces and scored a technically sublime volley against Millwall.
Joe Gelhardt (Hull City
When Hull City needed a goal in November to continue their unexpected promotion push, it was Gelhardt who provided it. As well as an assist, his four goals either put his side ahead or were clinically taken winners against Portsmouth and Stoke.
Carlton Morris (Derby County) – striker
A bittersweet month for Morris, an invaluable presence on and off the pitch, who began it with a hat-trick at Sheffield United and scored again against Hull City and Blackburn to make it five goals in three games before suffering a serious ankle injury.
Ellis Simms (Coventry City) – striker
It says everything about Simms’ attitude as an impact substitute that when the chance to start games arrived, he scored five goals, including a brilliant first-time lobbed finish at Middlesbrough, and added an assist in just over three games
The winner will be decided by a three-person panel consisting of Don Goodman, EFL chief Trevor Birch and Ivor Davies from sponsors SkyBet, and announced on Friday morning.
