The Tigers will be aiming to bounce back against Phil Parkinson’s outfit
Hull City defender Charlie Hughes has echoed the thoughts of captain Lewie Coyle in calling for a change of approach in a bid to stem the flow of goals they’re conceding.
City go into Wednesday night’s visit of Wrexham at the MKM Stadium looking to shake off the embarrassment of their 4-1 hammering at home to Middlesbrough last Friday night, having found themselves four down at the break.
Coyle demanded a response from Sergej Jakirovic’s squad, and Hughes backed up those comments as they look to find a solution to their ongoing struggles, which have seen them claim just three clean sheets in 20 league and cup games so far this season.
“It’s probably a learning curve the other night, and it’s probably a good one to have now before the Christmas period, because we’ve got a lot of games coming up and new challenges. Another game Wednesday night, just to go and put things right,” the defender told Hull Live.
“There’s ups and downs in football and that is football, especially in the Championship. We could have gone third after that performance, but listen, that’s the bullet that we’ve got to take, and it’s a learning curve.
“We’re going into Wednesday night with full confidence to go and beat them. It’s another home game as well, which we love; we love our home fans, we love playing at home. It’s another big opportunity to put things right and move on.”
If there was a crumb of comfort from a chastening evening, it was the fact City didn’t suffer any further damage to their goals against column, and did get on the scoresheet with Joe Gelhardt’s penalty, before he limped off injured.
“It’s hard for any team to go out in the second half and try and perform at 4-0 down. It’s a big ask for any team,” Hughes continued. “Credit to the lads for keeping their heads held high and going out and trying to prove something, but listen, it’s tough for anyone to go out and play at 4-0 down and try and play football. Like I said, it’s a learning curve.
“We’ve taken the positives from the game and what we can learn from, and just roll into Wednesday night with full confidence to put things right.
“Skip’s right with what he said after the game. It was bang on. It is a turning point for us. We want to concede less, that is our aim. Concede less, score more. We haven’t really got a problem at the moment scoring goals, but it’s the goals that we’re conceding, and that’s something that we look at.
“That’s our challenge, to concede less, and we’d love to do that. It is a turning point for us, and we head into Wednesday, and we put those things right, move on, and go again as a team.”
